TUESDAY EVENING: MAJOR RISE IN SOI MAY SIGNAL ANOTHER STEP BACK IN RETROGRESSIVE PATTERN AFTER THE NEW YEAR.

For the past month, we have been playing a one step forward, two step back game with this ridge and the game continues the next 7-10 days, with the coldest shot of the winter on the way for the west this weekend and early next week as the ridge is backing west to near 30 east in the means over the weekend. This will allow a strong upper trof to dive south through the west central part of Europe and spread the coldest air mass of the season so far into western areas of Europe. The broad base of the trof means the eastern and central part of the continent continue cold overall.

A tropical cyclone is expected to form off the north coast of Australia over the next 5 days and this will send the SOI to strong positive levels, which would probably mean a step back for the ridge 2-3 weeks down the road. First it will try to migrate east again next week, and so milder atlantic air will get involved. But here is heads up. Around the New Year we should see the major long wave trofs in position to force another atlantic retrogression and so very cold air may invade much of western and central Europe and then lock in. The danger is that at this time of the year the pattern sets and holds. This is fine if its mild, but the trend is almost like it was during the summer with the ridge, which started in the east and central and wound up over the west at the height of summer. We may going the same way now, only its with a trof, at the height of winter.

It would be fitting way to balance things out.

Comme an août ...
